Minister Tau meets with US Trade Representative, Ambassador Jamieson Greer
As directed by President Ramaphosa, Minister Tau travelled to Washington DC to engage the United States Trade Representative (USTR), Ambassador Jamieson Greer and members of congress. Minister Tau held a cordial and constructive meeting with the USTR on matters of mutual interest. The meeting was preceded by intensive three-day discussions by senior officials.
The two sides agreed that the matters discussed need to be prioritized. Minister Tau thanked Ambassador Greer for his availability and willingness to engage with the South African team in a constructive manner. Both Parties agreed to a roadmap that will inform future engagements towards the conclusion of the process. “I will be briefing President Ramaphosa on the outcomes of the discussions and will then engage various stakeholders” said Minister Tau.
The United States remains a key trade and investment partner for South Africa, with bilateral trade at US$15.1 billion in 2024. South Africa’s exports to the United States were valued at US$8.2 billion in 2024; while US imports into SA were US$6.9 billion. There are more than 600 US companies in South Africa and more than 22 South African companies in the United States.
