G20 South Africa is well underway, with the first round of technical meetings in January and February. But despite an ambitious G20 agenda, it has not been as smooth sailing as many would have hoped. Existing geopolitical tensions are intensifying discussions. Notably, the absence of high-level United States officials in the First Foreign Ministers and First Finance and Central Bank Ministerial Meetings has sparked controversy, leaving many to wonder if the G20 process will deliver progressive policy outcomes. |

It is not all bad though. Early discussions have included meaningful conversations about policy items affecting the African continent. The South African government has also shown a deliberate intention to use its presidency to forge ahead with policies that impact lives on the African continent and the broader developing world, regardless of who may not be showing up to the table. |

KEY THEMES AND DEVELOPMENTS
- Geopolitical Considerations
- International Financial Architecture
- Climate Change and Food Security
- African Voices in the G20
- The African Union became a permanent member of the G20 in 2023 during India's G20 Presidency.
- Nigeria and Egypt have been made “permanent guest countries” in the G20 as of this year. This is a similar position to Spain, which has been a permanent guest country since 2008.
- South Africa invited five of the African development regions to participate this year, although this is unlikely to continue in future meetings. This includes:
- Arab Maghreb Union (UMA)
- Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA)
- Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS)
- Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS)
- Southern African Development Community (SADC).
- Finance Minister’s Meeting
- A Chair’s Summary was produced in the first Finance and Central Bank Ministers meeting. This happens when there is not sufficient consensus to produce a Communique that represents the views of all countries.
- There is a debate underway about what it would mean for the US to pull out of Institutions related to International Financial Architecture (IFA) - including the World Bank and IMF. While this is unlikely, the US has already applied heavy tariffs to its neighbours and China, and pulled out of both the UN Tax Convention negotiations and the Paris Accord leaving unanswered questions about how far the shock therapy of the IFA will go.
