AWS Skills Centre Launch Cape Town - 16 August 2023

On Wednesday 16 August 2023, Amazon Web Services (AWS) celebrated the launch of the third international, first outside of the US and a first for Africa AWS Skills Centre in Cape Town, South Africa furthering our mission to remove the barriers of access to cloud skills training. The latest contribution to Amazon’s commitment to provide 29 million people with cloud computing training for free by 2025. The AWS Skills Centre is designed to deliver free training that helps non-technical learners build new cloud skills and unlock career options for in-demand tech jobs. 

AWS announced the news during an in-person grand opening event and ribbon-cutting ceremony that was attended by government dignitaries, local community leaders, education partners, AWS customers and partners, and community members. The event programme included tours of the Cloud Discovery Space, performances by the South Africa Youth Choir, and remarks from the Premier of the Western Cape Alan Winde, Director-General of Higher Education and Training Nkosinathi Sishi, Provincial Minister Mireille Wenger, Member of Mayoral Committee James Vos, and AWS leaders Maureen Lonergan, Tanuja Randery, and Rashika Ramlal. 

AWS Skills Centre in Cape Town is a free training centre for anyone in the community who is curious about cloud computing and future job possibilities in the cloud. The AWS Skills centre is open to all learners’ classes and is accessible both in person and virtual.   By providing an in-person learning space for anyone in the local community—regardless of background, education level, or social status—AWS is helping to create a diverse pipeline of entry-level cloud talent across the Africa, Middle-East and Turkey region.
